What is a decent inexpensive vacuum cleaner to buy?

Wind On The Water asked:

Money is very tight right now and my old, old, old vacuum cleaner truly bit the dust permanently. When I went to wal-mart to look at new vacuum cleaners I became rather confused and bewildered over the selection. I have been left behind with the 1970’s style vacuums. Yes, I know - it’s rather pathetic.
Can anybody out there make a suggestion? I do not want to spend over $150-160. I have short pile wall to wall carpeting and linoleum.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
