Is there any way to get rid of vacuum cleaner smells?

Jooooo asked:
Recently, our vacuum cleaner has started producing a really musty smell every time we use it (quite reminiscent of dog, despite the fact we don’t have one).

Are there any ways of getting rid of the smell from the hoover itself? We’ve tried changing the bag and I’m not fond of air freshners - if you ask me, they smell worse than the hoover!
Wow, thanks everyone - some really useful tips! I shall definitely be trying out a few of these things.
Cheers!

Wash or change all of your filters. Another good idea is to spray febreeze on your carpet once you have finished vacuuming. I would not advice using those powered carpet deodorizers.
