Are robotic vacuum cleaners worth the $300 or so that they cost?

Blue Sky Guy asked:
If you have first hand experience with these units, please advise. The idea sounds great; turn it on, leave the house, come home and the whole house is vacuumed, and the unit is back in its port being recharged. Do they do a good job? Do they miss areas like around the chair legs at the dining room table? Do you reccommend a particular brand?

I’ve seen one in action and I am not impressed. They take forever and are weak. It only takes a few minutes to vacuum. The $300 would be better spent on a real vacuum. Real vacuums are not only more powerful, but with all the hoses and attachments they come with it makes them much more versatile.

They are very slow, don’t do a good job on carpets and you have to remove chairs and other obstacles in the room. We feel its easier to just do it yourself.
