Feather and Ball Bearing Dropped in Vacuum

teralabUK asked:

We are all told at school that in a vacuum, all objects accelerate under gravity at the same rate, regardless of their mass, shape or size. This is something that I had never witnessed first hand. During the Apollo 15 mission, David Scott dropped a hammer and a feather on the moon to demonstrate that they would hit the ground simultaneously. The result of this demonstration looks rather strange though because of the low lunar gravity. It looks more like the hammer is falling abnormally slowly. I decided I wanted to witness this phenomenon first hand, so set up an experiment in the bell-jar vacuum rig. As space is limited in the bell-jar, I decided to use a steel ball bearing rather than a hammer. The feather was held in place with a relay and the ball bearing was held by an electromagnet. The two were powered from the same supply so that they could be de-energized, simultaneously dropping the feather and the ball bearing. The ball bearing weighs 67g and is 1 inch in diameter. The feather is less than 0.1g and does not register on my balance. It is 73mm long. I placed some crumpled up aluminium foil under the ball bearing to absorb the impact and prevent it from rolling or bouncing inside the bell-jar.

I’m looking for a cordless car vacuum that will work well for cleaning my car. I like to have some kind of an extension or piece that can get between/under seats as well.

Any thoughts? I haven’t found one good one…The Dyson small vacuum is too expensive.

What kind of vacuum do i need for aquarium?

August 27th, 2010 | Posted in vacuums   Comments Off
xeptra asked:

I have an aquarium with sand substrate. I tried using my gravel vacuum on it but it didn’t suck up any of the debris. I held the vacuum a little above the sand jt like I am supposed to. The debris would go up the syphon a little then fall back down. I even tried getting closer to the sand and it did the same thing. Any ideas? Do i need a different kind of vacuum? I’ve heard of netting the sand. How do you do that?
I am not having any problems getting the suction started.

How often have you bought a new vacuum. What is a good vacuum?

Daisy is a crunchy con asked:

I have had 3 vacuums die in about 5 years. I clean them out, take them apart to look for clogs but after a while they just don’t work very well anymore. Right now I am stuck with a 6 month old vacuum that doesn’t really work very well. I am wondering if that is a very common experience.

What vacuum do you love over the long haul?
