Electrolux 330 Automatic vacuum cleaner

Saturday, September 25th, 2010
U5096 asked:

This was my near-mint condition Electrolux 330 Automatic from 1973 that I sold a while back. It was a short lived model and ran from 1973-75 and was replaced by the 345. It featured an Automatic floortool that retracted its brushes when cleaning carpets and released them automatically when vacuuming hardfloors. It would also switch itself off if it became blocked or the bag got too full and the orange light would come on. The knob at the front of the machine controlled the sensitivity of this. My 330 also has a very rare optional Turbinette floor tool, it was an early style of suction driven power head. In the video I use it with a later style hose from a 302 model as the original weaved hose tends to lose a lot of suction now because of its age.

How good is vacuum between the walls of vacuum flask?

Thursday, September 23rd, 2010
Alexander asked:

The gap between outer and inner walls of vacuum flask is 1cm.

Before the flask was evacuated, the air between the walls was at normal pressure 100kPa and the flask was losing heat at rate 100W.

After air was evacuated and the flask was sealed, the flask is losing heat at rate 0.1W.

Assuming that all heat transfer is due to heat conductivity of residiul air only, ESTIMATE the pressure of residual air between the walls of the flask.

If there were real live ammo on the floor and you used a vacuum cleaner to pick it up. What would happen to the vacuum? Could the bullet kill you?

Can you use vacuum bags made for other brands?

Thursday, September 16th, 2010
Heather G asked:

I don’t want to drive all the way to Sears & was wondering if I could use vacuum bags made for Hoover or another brand in my Kenmore upright vacuum? They look the same, its just hard to find these Kenmore bags locally. Anyone have any success with bags made for other brand vacuums?

Jelly asked:

I am looking to purchase a vacuum that will vacuum my carpet and shampoo my carpet when needed, but is 1 vacuum. I don’t want to have to buy 2 seperate vacuums if there is one that does both. Any information is greatly appreciated! Thanks.
Specifically for Carpets…The Bisell 5200z is for hardfloors.

If a vacuum is quiet does that mean that it is not as powerful?

Sunday, September 12th, 2010
CountryGirl asked:

I am looking to purchase a canister vacuum for our home with mostly hard wood flooring and have gone to several vacuum shops to try out different vacuums and was told today that the Miele brand vacuums may be quiet but are not powerful at all. Miele had been my first choice because they are very quiet but after the sales reps spill today I’m not so sure. Just wanted to see what others thought before I purchase. Any thoughts or reccomendations would be greatly appreciated.

Feather and Ball Bearing Dropped in Vacuum

Tuesday, September 7th, 2010
teralabUK asked:

We are all told at school that in a vacuum, all objects accelerate under gravity at the same rate, regardless of their mass, shape or size. This is something that I had never witnessed first hand. During the Apollo 15 mission, David Scott dropped a hammer and a feather on the moon to demonstrate that they would hit the ground simultaneously. The result of this demonstration looks rather strange though because of the low lunar gravity. It looks more like the hammer is falling abnormally slowly. I decided I wanted to witness this phenomenon first hand, so set up an experiment in the bell-jar vacuum rig. As space is limited in the bell-jar, I decided to use a steel ball bearing rather than a hammer. The feather was held in place with a relay and the ball bearing was held by an electromagnet. The two were powered from the same supply so that they could be de-energized, simultaneously dropping the feather and the ball bearing. The ball bearing weighs 67g and is 1 inch in diameter. The feather is less than 0.1g and does not register on my balance. It is 73mm long. I placed some crumpled up aluminium foil under the ball bearing to absorb the impact and prevent it from rolling or bouncing inside the bell-jar.
