What do you think of Dyson vacuum cleaners?

Sunday, January 31st, 2010
Barrie G asked:

I own a Dyson and although it is great for picking up pet hair, at almost every other level it is an appalling contraption, cannot overide rugs, will not pick up small bits preferring to push them around the room. The hose ,oh! that bloody hose arrangement, must have been designed to drive us bonkers and why do they have to have that horrendous appearance?

The Facts About Vacuum Cleaners and Hepa Filtration

Friday, January 29th, 2010
Michael Swift asked:

In today’s society, we have become much more knowledgeable and aware of environmental problems like indoor and outdoor air pollution. We understand the need for energy efficient appliances, cleaner burning fuels, and the use of filtration in our homes. When we are presented with a product that uses HEPA filtration, we assume it will help to improve our indoor air quality. However, with the products using this technology costing hundreds of dollars and the annual cost of filter replacement, shouldn’t we investigate HEPA filtration further?

HEPA technology was originally developed for the U.S. nuclear program. This program required clean rooms and only HEPA technology could achieve it. HEPA filtration has since spread into the medical field, silicone chip processing, and other industries.

HEPA (High Efficiency Particle Arrestance) filters 99.97% of particles down to 0.3 microns. By way of comparison, a human hair is roughly 40 microns. Obviously, the technology works very well indeed. However, a problem arises when these filters are used with products like vacuum cleaners.

HEPA filters require a low air flow velocity. The HEPA filters used in vacuum cleaners are no different. Conversely, vacuum cleaners require high velocity air flow in order to do their job properly. The better the air flow the better the vacuum cleaner works. How do vacuum cleaner manufacturers solve this dilemma? They simply allow most of the air to bypass the filter. You, as the consumer, are not made aware of this fact. At this point, common sense tells us that HEPA filters have their place but it’s not in vacuum cleaners. Is there an alternative that works? The answer to that question is a resounding yes.

The Filtrete filter was designed by 3M to be used in products which require a high air velocity. Tests show that these filters perform as well, or better, than HEPA filtration in vacuum cleaners, air conditioners, and other products. Another major benefit is the cost of Filtrete filters.

Replacing your vacuum cleaner’s HEPA filter, according to manufacturer’s recommendations, can end up costing hundreds of dollars per year. On the other hand, Filtrete filters are very reasonably priced. Filtrete filters can also be used in different ways.

Vacuum cleaners which use the bag as the filter are less bulky, lighter, and more efficient. Filtrete makes filter bags for many different brands and types of vacuum cleaners. Bagged vacuum cleaners themselves are less expensive than models using HEPA filtration. You can purchase a quality, high suction vacuum cleaner with all the bells and whistles for less money by purchasing the bagged, non-HEPA version and use a Filtrete filter bag instead.

The lessons we’ve learned here can be carried over into all areas of our lives. Don’t believe everything they tell you. Just because a product is expensive and using high technology don’t assume it’s the best choice.

Get a Steam Vacuum Cleaner for Deep Down Cleaning

Thursday, January 28th, 2010
Abigail Franks asked:

Great-looking tailored carpeting and floor covering requires constant work to keep it looking beautiful. A steam vacuum cleaner allows you to make quick work of those traffic pattern areas and anywhere deep dirt collects. You’re not the first person to have dirt tracks through your home and on your carpets. If you have kids, dirt tracks, juice stains and miscellaneous food debris discolorations on your carpet are just the fact of life. With the steam vacuum cleaner however, it’s much easier to keep your carpets looking their best.

The steam vacuum cleaner is actually not steam based, but uses a cleaning solution in hot water to clean your carpet. Preparation and pre spotting is the key to removing the stains and discolorations. You can actually rent a steam vacuum cleaner at your local hardware store or supermarket. These rentals are typically made for two days at a fixed price which is more than enough time to clean your carpets. Although many people pay for a heavy-duty carpet cleaning service, a steam vacuum cleaner rental is a great idea between those more expensive cleanings.

But the large expense of a steam vacuum rental however is in the cleaning solutions and chemicals. Here are a few carpet cleaning solution chemicals that are a lot less expensive and are claimed to do just as good a job. This is a good time to remind you to be very careful using any type of chemicals.

It’s also important to test all chemicals even those specifically recommended for steam vacuum cleaners before using on your carpet. One quick way to check is to take a white cloth dipped it in the chemicals and rub your carpet in a hidden spot to check for color fastness. If any color transfers to your rag, the dyes used in your carpet will not hold up to the chemical recipes selected.

Here are a few home carpet cleaning recipes that have been very successful.

1. Go to the local janitorial supply and pick up pre-mixed carpet steam vacuum cleaning solution by the gallon

2. 3 teaspoons of cheap, non moisturizing clear dishwashing liquid, 1/4 cup of ammonia, and 1/4 cup of vinegar to 2 gallons of water.

3. Use equal portions of very hot water and Windex window cleaner. You can buy Windex or plain window cleaner by the gallon at your local janitorial supply store. Just find any window cleaner that has ammonia in the ingredients.

4. Pre-treat your carpets, using a spray bottle with very hot water in an oxygenating bleach such as Oxy-clean. I personally have used regular chlorine bleach and hot water in a 1% solution on my light gray carpets to make them much brighter. [10 parts water and 1 part bleach]

Remember that whatever steam carpet cleaner chemicals you select be certain to rinse your carpets thoroughly. The key to keeping your carpets cleaner longer is to remove all of the soap and chemicals used to clean them. Many steam cleaning solutions can act as a dirt magnet making your carpets look dull and dirty much faster.

Using a steam vacuum cleaner rental can be much less expensive than having a service in to clean your carpets. If you clean your carpets at least twice a year however, it may be worth while considering the purchase of your own steam vacuum.

The Advantages To A Hepa Vacuum Cleaner

Tuesday, January 26th, 2010
David Roth asked:

There are advantages to most types of vacuum cleaners. One of these that can offer the best advantages, though, is one with a HEPA filter. The advantages to a HEPA vacuum cleaner are many. They are generally designed for people that have allergies, asthma, and other breathing problems. They filter pollen, dander, and other items from the air. In addition, the advantages to a HEPA vacuum cleaner extend to people that have children and pets. With pets, the HEPA vacuum cleaner filters a lot of hair and other particles out of the air, keeping them from accumulating. For children, the HEPA vacuum cleaner ensures that they will be breathing air that is clean and safe for them. The question is, do you or your family need to spend the extra money on a fancy vacuum and is the extra cost really worth it and what is the benefit you’ll be gaining. And are you just better off getting one of the popular models like Oreck or Dyson and being just as well off? Well, we’ll attempt to answer those questions in this article.

Not every vacuum that has a filter in it is a HEPA vacuum cleaner, though, and the advantages to a HEPA vacuum cleaner are much more significant than vacuums that only have a standard filter in them. Not all individuals realize this, which is unfortunate. The advantages to a HEPA vacuum cleaner are many and various, and simply buying a vacuum with a filter in it is not the same. It will not provide the same amount of clean air, and will generally not be helpful to people that have breathing problems. Because HEPA vacuum cleaners carry so many particles out of the air, their filters have to changed often, though, and this can inconvenience some customers. For many customers who don’t need the vacuum, it can become a big annoyance and an unnecessary cost that other vacuums don’t have. This is a legitimate concern and really you have to consider what is important to you and your family.

Some people wonder whether the advantages to a HEPA vacuum cleaner are actually worth the extra money that is paid for them. In general, the answer seems to be yes. Most of the people that have a HEPA vacuum cleaner feel that they made a good decision. For those that do not have small children, pets, or breathing problems, however, the advantages to a HEPA vacuum cleaner might not be worth the cost because the number of particles in the air would not be sufficient enough to need to be filtered out. No one in this type of household would likely notice the difference. In general, people that want one generally know if they absolutely need one and the cost and the annoyance will be a small price to pay for the cleaner air they will breathe. For other people though, they won’t know any better and consider a regular vacuum cleaner just fine for their needs. It all depends on the individual’s personal decision. The advantages to a HEPA vacuum cleaner, though, are worth the money for those that need the extra filtration.

One of the biggest challenges anyone with a home faces is the constant lugging the cleaning supplies and vacuum cleaner around the house. This is especially true with a 2 story home. The answer however is found in quality central vacuum cleaner systems.

A central vacuum cleaner typically has a much larger motor and suction capability and larger holding capacity. These units are installed outside or in a non obtrusive area inside your home with hose attachment points installed in various places of your home. So when you want to vacuum the upstairs bedrooms, it’s a simple matter to go to the vacuum connection point, attach the hose and you’re ready to go. These are also not just vacuum however. Most central vacuum cleaning systems feature powered tools that clean deeply and quickly.

The question then comes up ” what is the best central vacuum system” available? The answer, as with most everything is that it depends. Central vacuum systems are available in many designs. Here are a few things to consider

1. Is room to install the unit an issue? Then a compact sized footprint is important to consider.
