Vacuum Cleaner Brush Roll - How to Clean?

Yuck! I was trying to vacuum today and noticed my vacuum cleaner was hardly picking up anything. That’s when I noticed that the brush roll was just covered in hair and dust, etc. Any tips for cleaning the brush roll or do I need to get a new brush roll and/or vacuum (I think my vacuum cleaner might be discontinued when I checked on the manufacturer’s website)???
